Tomra unveils automated collection point for reusable takeaway packaging

-

Tomra has introduced its new Reuse Collection Point (RCP) at the Reuse Economy Expo in Paris – an automated reverse vending machine (RVM) designed to accept various types of reusable takeaway food packaging, such as boxes, bowls, and cups.

Presented as the world’s first “open-managed” reuse system of its kind, the RCP was showcased to a global audience for the first time in Paris. It builds on the proven success of Tomra’s pilot initiative in Aarhus, Denmark, which has already seen the return of over 1 million reusable cups at an 85% redemption rate since its launch in January 2024.

The open-managed system is designed to accept any QR-coded reusable container registered within the system – from coffee cups to salad bowls – and instantly refunds the deposit (such as DKK 5 / EUR 0.67 in Aarhus) to consumers via mobile wallets or credit cards. Tomra’s infrastructure leverages serialized QR codes to ensure full traceability, enabling robust data reporting on container rotations, return rates, and environmental impact.

According to Tomra, the Rotake system’s ability to deliver measurable environmental benefits is a key strength. A Eunomia study cited by the company notes that a reusable plastic cup needs to be used only six times to surpass even the lowest-impact single-use alternative (recycled cardboard cups) on sustainability metrics.

The Aarhus initiative offers a working example of what a successful circular system can look like at a municipal level. “European cities come alive in summer – coffee on the go, park picnics, open-air festivals, and more – but this vibrancy also drives litter and waste. We want to make reuse as convenient as single use, which is why our new Reuse Collection Point builds on over 50 years of our expertise in deposit return systems, to help cities tackle their growing amounts of waste,” said Geir Saether, SVP and head of Tomra Reuse.

Beyond city applications, Tomra is preparing to deploy Rotake Venue, a system optimized for large-scale events and stadiums with high-volume, real-time collection requirements. A live demonstration is also being presented at the company’s stand at the Reuse Economy Expo.

Tomra is also using the event to launch additional innovations, including the Tomra T70 Dual BottleGlide. This machine, developed in support of CITEO’s ReUse project in France, is adapted for reusable glass bottle returns in supermarkets. Its zigzag alignment system helps slow down and orient bottles to reduce breakage, making them suitable for sanitization and reuse instead of disposal or downcycling.

“Effective reuse systems rely on smart, intuitive technology, as well as strong regulation and consumer incentives. Our innovations provide the backbone cities and producers need to comply with EPR obligations and deliver circular systems that transform the way we use and reuse the planet’s resources,” said Stéphan Arino, vice president of public affairs at Tomra.

“As France and the EU continue to push for circularity through regulations like PPWR, Tomra Collection France is proud to offer solutions that are ready today,” added Paul Fabiano, managing director of Tomra Collection France. “Our participation in the Reuse Economy Expo is an important opportunity to connect with partners, cities, and businesses ready to create a world without waste.”
