Life Cycle Assessment study confirms sustainable performance of rotogravure printing

-

The Global Rotogravure Association (GRA) has completed its comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study evaluating the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) of rotogravure printing in comparison with other major printing technologies.

Initiated by the GRA and conducted in collaboration with the SP – Center for Sustainability in Printing, Processing and Packaging at Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK), the study provides a standardized and application-based assessment of environmental impact across the printing industry.

The project focused on comparing printing technologies within real application scenarios rather than in isolation. Three representative case studies were analyzed: flexible film packaging (rotogravure vs. flexographic), commercial illustration printing (rotogravure vs. offset), and decorative paper printing (rotogravure vs. digital inkjet).

Using a harmonized LCA framework and measuring Global Warming Potential over 100 years (GWP100), the study delivers fair and comparable results across technologies. The findings confirm that rotogravure printing performs on par with alternative processes in terms of carbon footprint when process standardization, material efficiency, and optimized production conditions are applied.

A key outcome of the study is that sustainability in printing is not determined by the technology alone. Instead, factors such as substrate selection, ink systems, and process efficiency play a decisive role. The results underline the importance of standardized methodologies to enable transparent comparisons and measurable progress across the industry.

The project also highlights the value of close collaboration between academia and industry, bringing together scientific expertise and practical application knowledge to address sustainability challenges in a meaningful and data-driven way.

With this study, the GRA provides the industry with a robust and scientifically grounded reference for evaluating environmental performance and supports ongoing efforts towards more sustainable printing solutions.
