Südpack cuts CO2e emissions 21% against 2021 baseline

-

Südpack has achieved a 21% reduction in total CO2e emissions in 2025 compared with the 2021 baseline, as the company continues efforts under its Sustainability Strategy to cut its operational carbon footprint and pursue Scope 3 targets. The manufacturer of plastic films and packaging concepts for food, non-food, pharmaceutical, medical and technical applications has committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target, establishing validated near-term targets for Scopes 1, 2 and 3.1 with clear goals set for 2030. The company’s Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) serves as a metric and management tool for tracking progress and identifying further reduction potential.

In Scopes 1 and 2 – covering direct emissions and purchased energy – Südpack achieved a 73% reduction in emissions compared with the 2021 baseline, against a 2030 target of 76.3%. In Scope 3.1 (purchased goods and services), which accounts for around two-thirds of the company’s total emissions, emissions were reduced by 16%, with a 25% reduction targeted by 2030. The company said consistent action in this category is of particular importance given its scale.

Compared with 2024, the company’s CCF increased slightly by 3.91%, though the annual target based on the SBTi targets was still met, according to the company. Factors behind the increase included a rise in sales volumes, which directly affects Südpack’s product-related Scope 3 footprint for both purchased goods and end-of-life impact, as well as the expansion of the company’s plants in Erolzheim and Coulmer, France, in 2025. The company said these investments have also expanded its capacity to produce lightweight packaging materials designed according to Design for Recycling guidelines, supporting further reductions in its CCF.

To meet its reduction targets while pursuing continued sales growth, Südpack is focusing on PP- and PE-based packaging concepts compatible with existing recycling streams, as well as reducing the weight of its high-performance materials to conserve resources and reduce emissions across the logistics chain and at end of life. In package printing, the company has seen growing customer uptake of its SPQ technology, which it said enables a more efficient printing process and helped reduce emissions associated with solvent consumption by around 9.5% compared with 2024. The company noted that the extent to which these products contribute to climate protection depends largely on when customers switch to alternative packaging concepts.

Südpack also reported progress in energy management. Since the beginning of 2025, its Coulmer site has been supplied with green electricity backed by guarantees of origin, meaning all of the company’s EU production sites are now powered entirely by green electricity. Renewables currently account for 57% of the group’s overall energy mix, a share the company aims to increase to 88% by 2030 through measures including sustainable energy sources and continued electrification, such as replacing gas with green electricity. Energy efficiency measures have reduced total energy consumption by 19% since 2021, and the company said transport-related emissions have also been reduced through ongoing optimization efforts despite higher purchasing and sales volumes.

The company has also introduced a new software platform to manage sustainability data across its international operations. The platform consolidates emissions data, targets and progress in a single dashboard, which the company said helps identify decarbonization opportunities, meet reporting requirements, and standardize digital processes for data collection and analysis.
