Flint Group earns RecyClass approval for its NC-free inks

-

Flint Group, a leading supplier of inks and coatings for the global packaging sector, has achieved RecyClass technology approval for its nitrocellulose-free surface print (NC-free) VertixCode Star SC WB1U, MatrixCode Star SC WBU5, and MatrixCode Print WBU8 ink technologies.

Developed for flexographic and gravure printing on flexible packaging substrates, VertixCode Star SC, MatrixCode Star SC and MatrixCode Print are NC-free inks that deliver enhanced chemical stability at the high temperatures typically encountered during mechanical recycling. This improved stability supports the production of higher-quality recyclate, helping to increase material recovery and reduce waste throughout the recycling process.

To identify more circular solutions, the RecyClass PO Films technical committee commissioned a test campaign in line with the recyclability evaluation protocol for PE films.

Flint said the robust testing procedures confirm that packaging printed with VertixCode Star SC, MatrixCode Star SC, and MatrixCode Print are fully compatible with established European recycling streams for colored, flexible PE. This approval provides converters and brand owners with independent assurance of their packaging’s recyclability, with no negative impact on the quality of the resulting pellets or films.

An initiative driven by the European plastics value chain, RecyClass bases its technology approvals on comprehensive testing carried out by recognized laboratories. Each assessment examines the full recyclability of printed materials through rigorous extrusion and quality evaluations, including testing for odor, discoloration, and the mechanical performance of films manufactured from recycled materials.

Eddy Arbogast, senior director of Flexible Packaging R&D & Technology at Flint Group, said, “With the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), printers and converters must ensure that their packaging components align with today’s recycling infrastructure and circular economy targets. Achieving RecyClass Approval for our flexible packaging products means our customers can meet that requirement with a verified, NC-free ink technology that makes recycling simpler and enables them to deliver circular-ready packaging to market with confidence.

“RecyClass recognition further strengthens Flint Group’s position as a reliable partner in supporting the packaging industry’s transition towards circularity. These efforts are essential to ensuring our technologies continue to meet evolving recyclability standards and contribute to creating a more sustainable packaging industry.”
