At Labelexpo India 2024, Epson India unveiled its flagship UV press, the SurePress L-6534VW, marking its formal introduction to the Indian market. “The primary objective of our participation in this exhibition is to reintroduce Epson’s capabilities in the label segment and showcase the L6534VW UV press,” said Vasudevan LK, general manager, LFP/IE/DTF at Epson India. The SurePress L6534VW stands out with its ability to deliver high-speed production at up to 50 meters per minute while offering versatile operational modes at 30, 15, and even 7.5 meters per minute. These modes enable converters to produce a variety of high-value products.

The press integrates digital varnish technology, white ink, and CMYK to support applications like spot varnish, gloss, matte finishes, multi-layer tactile effects, and even invisible security printing. Vasudevan said, “Converters can achieve these embellishments in a single pass, eliminating the need for multiple devices or offline processes.”

Indian market adoption and challenges

Although the SurePress L6534VW had a global presence for two years, it was launched in India just six months ago, with two installations already operational. Commenting on its adaptability, Vasudevan highlighted that the press is compatible with standard substrates used in flexographic printing, reducing material costs. However, for specific requirements, a primer coating may be necessary.

When asked about challenges, Vasudevan acknowledged the price-sensitive nature of the Indian market. “Customers expect solutions that align with their existing workflows while delivering enhanced value without significant cost escalations,” he noted.

Sustainability at the core

Sustainability remains a critical focus for Epson. The SurePress L6534VW uses UV inks compliant with European food-grade safety standards, making them suitable for food and pharmaceutical packaging. Moreover, the press consumes significantly less energy compared to traditional systems. “This commitment to sustainability reflects in both the energy efficiency of our products and the safety standards of our inks,” Vasudevan added.

Digital embellishments

One of the unique propositions of the L6534VW is its inline digital embellishment capability. Unlike conventional embellishment systems that operate offline, Epson’s integrated digital varnish feature allows converters to enhance labels directly on the press. Vasudevan said, “The ability to apply tactile effects or security features in a single workflow adds significant value and differentiation for converters.”

India as a growth epicenter

Eisuke Morishita, senior manager, sales and marketing (C&I Printer) at Epson India described India as one of the fastest-growing markets globally, drawing attention to its expanding population, rising GDP, and burgeoning investment landscape. He emphasized, “For Epson, the Indian market holds immense potential, particularly in the commercial and industrial product segments. This growth aligns with the increasing demand for innovative solutions in sectors like label printing.”

Discussing Epson’s initiatives to tap into this promising market, Morishita highlighted the company’s diverse product portfolio. “We offer a wide range of printers, from home and office printers to large-format printers and specialized machines like textile printers and label presses,” he explained. “This variety enables Epson to cater to multiple business segments, ensuring a strategic foothold in the Indian market.”

Morishita specifically pointed out the potential of Epson’s label presses in India. He noted that the label press business could be a significant growth driver, reflecting the rising demand for advanced labeling solutions in the country’s packaging and manufacturing sectors.
