Parwez Izhar, Senior Vice President, Printing Cylinders Business, UFlex, shares key insights into the company’s groundbreaking advancements in sustainability and innovation in rotogravure cylinder manufacturing and flexographic technology at Labelexpo India 2024.

UFlex made a significant impact at Labelexpo India 2024 by presenting its advanced solutions in cylinder manufacturing and flexographic plates. Highlighting UFlex’s participation in the expo, Parwez Izhar, Senior Vice President, Printing Cylinders Business, UFlex, explained, “We are showcasing our DuPont and Kodak flexo plates, which represent the pinnacle of precision and sustainability. With the integration of Kodak’s unique Laser Square Spot technology, our plates deliver 100% flat-top dots, ensuring superior print quality.”

Izhar emphasized that the plates promote sustainability, as they are compatible with water-based inks. “Our partnership with Kodak Miraclon has enabled us to implement special screening technologies, making our plates the only ones in India that perform exceptionally well with water-based inks.”

Advancing rotogravure cylinder technology

Addressing technological advancements in rotogravure cylinder manufacturing, Izhar spoke about plans to transition from traditional chrome coating to a more sustainable coating. “This innovative coating will deliver the same strength while being far more sustainable,” he noted.

UFlex has pioneered the development of low GSM cylinders designed for compatibility with water-based inks, aligning with modern sustainability standards. “Our state-of-the-art robotic laser engraving line enables us to manufacture rotogravure printing cylinders with precise cell structures. This ensures exceptional print consistency, reduced ink consumption, and high-quality output. The emphasis on low GSM and water-based solutions highlights our commitment to eco-friendly innovation,” Izhar stated.

Additionally, UFlex’s Think Laboratory, equipped with robotic laser engraving technology, is pivotal in reducing VOC (volatile organic compound) levels and energy consumption during cylinder production. “The Think Laboratory cylinders are not only environmentally sustainable but also deliver exceptional performance, making them a preferred choice for printers transitioning to water-based inks,” Izhar explained.

Gravure vs. flexo – the market dynamics

Izhar acknowledged the rising prominence of CI Flexo in short-run packaging but maintained that gravure remains a strong contender. “While flexo has grown from a negligible market share to 20% in the past five years, gravure still holds 80%. Its superior print quality and ability to handle large-scale runs make it indispensable,” he remarked.

R&D – the cornerstone of innovation

For UFlex, research and development (R&D) remain at the heart of its strategy to maintain a competitive edge. “Innovation stems from rigorous R&D, where we experiment with new technologies and refine processes to create value-added products. This approach allows us to shift from competing in commodity markets to a premium product segment, ultimately achieving more with less,” Izhar said.

He emphasized the company’s dedication to exploring blue ocean strategies and offering unique solutions that distinguish UFlex from its competitors.

By aligning its products with global environmental goals and continuously upgrading its manufacturing processes, UFlex is not just meeting current market demands but also shaping the future of the packaging industry. As Izhar concluded, “Our mission is to provide solutions that not only deliver exceptional quality but also respect our planet. This dual focus ensures we remain ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving industry.”
