Tetra Pak is extending its paper-based packaging expertise into the ice cream category with Tetra Pak ice cream wrap, a wrapping solution developed for ice cream producers. The wrap is undergoing validation with producers across Europe, and the company plans a phased rollout from Q4 2026, starting in Europe.
According to the company, the wrap is made from up to 85% paper sourced from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources. It is intended to expand the packaging choices available to ice cream producers, help brands stand out on shelf and deliver the performance needed throughout the cold chain.
The company said ice cream brands are looking for new ways to stand out and connect with changing consumer preferences. Research cited by Tetra Pak found that 24% of consumers globally consider sustainability an important aspect of ice cream packaging, while 16% prefer paper packaging for the category.
Tetra Pak said the wrap draws on more than 70 years of its experience in paper-based food packaging and an understanding of ice cream production, and has been designed for the practical realities of ice cream manufacturing. Its thin profile and advanced multi-layer structure are said to help protect products while using materials efficiently and supporting reliable operations.
Peter Lindstrom, vice president, food solutions at Tetra Pak, said, “Ice cream is one of the world’s most loved food categories, and innovation now extends beyond flavors and formats. Packaging is becoming an increasingly important way for brands to differentiate, attract attention and respond to changing consumer expectations.
“Tetra Pak ice cream wrap gives producers a new way to create a distinctive consumer experience, combining the familiar appearance of paper with the functionality required for ice cream products.”
The validation is being carried out with ice cream producers across Europe, including Swedish company Triumf Glass. According to Tetra Pak, the trials are helping it assess performance in live production environments and gather consumer insights ahead of wider commercialization. The company said it will expand to additional markets over time.
Moa Frisk Lönnblom, marketing director at Triumf Glass, said, “Innovation is an important part of our business, and we are excited to explore, together with Tetra Pak, how the ice cream wrap can create new opportunities in the ice cream category. It has the potential to offer consumers something genuinely different and help shape the future of ice cream packaging.”
