SGD Pharma awarded ISO 14021 for PCR glass packaging

-

SGD Pharma has become the first glass manufacturer in China to obtain ISO 14021 certification for its post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass packaging, marking a significant step forward in the production of verified PCR glass for the cosmetics and beauty sector. The certification is awarded by Bureau Veritas.

The company said, PCR glass manufacturing is integral to its decarbonization strategy, which targets a 42% reduction in Scope 1 & 2 emissions and a 25% cut in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (based on 2022 baselines). The use of PCR glass directly contributes to this goal: according to the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE), every 10% increase in recycled cullet reduces energy use by 3% and CO₂ emissions by 5%. The certification confirms that SGD Pharma’s recent production campaign used between 18% to 35% PCR content, measured in line with FEVE’s calculation standards.

“This certification is more than a milestone; it’s a testament to our commitment to lead the sustainable transition in glass packaging for cosmetics,” said Frédéric Barbier, Asia Pacific general manager at SGD Pharma. “By overcoming local supply chain constraints in securing high-quality PCR cullet in China, we are providing our partners with a certified, low-carbon solution that aligns with international norms.”

A major hurdle in PCR glass production in China is the sourcing of high-quality, compliant post-consumer glass cullet. SGD Pharma said it has established a rigorous, traceable sourcing and testing protocol to ensure consistency and full traceability for all its PCR production.

With rising regulatory pressure and a greater expectation from consumers for sustainable packaging, beauty brands are actively seeking verified circular solutions. Certified PCR glass packaging provides a reliable and transparent way for SGD Pharma’s partners to reduce their environmental footprint while advancing towards a circular economy.

The company said ISO 14021 certification confirms SGD Pharma’s environmental claims are evidence-based. It verifies compliance with rigorous internal monitoring procedures and adherence to FEVE guidelines for tracking and validating PCR used in production.
