pladis adopts recyclable paper block bottom packaging with Coveris partnership

-

pladis Global has introduced fully recyclable paper-based secondary packaging for its confectionery products in the United States through a collaboration with packaging manufacturer Coveris. The change replaces pre-made block bottom bags previously made from a composite of oriented polypropylene (OPP) and paper, which are not recyclable through standard waste management systems.

The new packaging consists of paper-based block bottom bags designed to be recyclable within existing paper recycling streams in the US market. The bags are used as secondary packaging for a range of pladis confectionery and snack brands sold in the country, including McVitie’s, GODIVA, Flipz and DeMet’s Turtles.

According to the companies, the transition to paper packaging required addressing technical challenges commonly associated with paper formats, such as cracking and fibre breakage in gusset areas. Coveris developed a redesigned bag structure intended to provide the required strength, stiffness and machine performance while maintaining shelf presentation. The packaging solution underwent technical development, testing and validation before being introduced commercially.

pladis North America stated that the paper packaging met its operational and quality requirements and enabled a smooth transition from the previous packaging format without disruption to production processes. Coveris said the project reflects its focus on developing recyclable packaging solutions that can be implemented at scale for branded consumer goods.

pladis Global is headquartered in London and operates manufacturing and commercial activities across multiple regions, supplying biscuits, confectionery and snack products to markets worldwide. The introduction of paper-based packaging in the US forms part of the company’s broader efforts to reduce the use of non-recyclable materials across its packaging portfolio.
