In response to rapidly changing market demands, Heidelberg has reaffirmed its strategic commitment to hybrid and automated printing solutions, underpinned by customer insights, technological innovation, and a robust service framework.

The company revealed that in recent years, it has seen a sharp rise in demand for flexible hybrid print environments, combining both offset and digital capabilities. This trend was highlighted through extensive customer engagement and a global survey of 200 print service providers conducted in 2023. Key challenges identified include managing ultra-short to long runs, reducing waste and delivery times, and simplifying complex workflows.

Addressing these needs, Heidelberg has expanded its commercial portfolio to support the full spectrum of print volumes. The offering includes Versafire toner-based digital systems for short runs, the new Jetfire inkjet systems for high-volume digital jobs, and Speedmaster offset presses for longer runs – among them, the versatile Anicolor model. The company says this integrated portfolio enables customers to optimize cost per sheet while managing varying job requirements with a unified workflow.

“What truly differentiates us in the market is our ability to offer a seamlessly integrated workflow across digital and offset systems,” Frank Schaum, head of segment print at Heidelberg said. “Combined with one of the most extensive service networks in the industry, we ensure reliable equipment availability and operational continuity for our customers.”

Focus on ease of use and service infrastructure

The company also emphasized ease of use as a critical factor, especially amid ongoing labor shortages in the printing industry. Heidelberg has prioritized user experience across all its systems, ensuring that both digital and offset machines are intuitive and accessible – even in hybrid setups.

With predictive maintenance already embedded across its product range, the company continues to support print shops in reducing downtime and managing total cost of ownership. “Simultaneous equipment availability is vital for hybrid environments, and our service capabilities are designed to meet this exact need,” Schaum added.

Driving data competency and color consistency

Recognizing the increasing importance of data, Heidelberg emphasized its early efforts to promote data aggregation across customer operations. Data from its systems empowers customers to streamline job planning, logistics, production optimization, and inventory control, while also enabling transparent service and internal benchmarking.

Additionally, color matching across platforms remains a key focus for the company. In hybrid environments where jobs move between digital and offset, maintaining color consistency is essential for scheduling flexibility and quality assurance. Heidelberg’s advanced color management tools are fully compatible across its system portfolio, ensuring seamless transitions and reliable output.

Paving the way for ‘Zero Touch’ future

Looking ahead, Heidelberg envisions a future dominated by hybrid and fully automated operations. Some of its customers reportedly manage over 2,000 print jobs daily, highlighting the need for intelligent software capable of handling complex workflows with minimal human intervention – a concept the company refers to as ‘Zero Touch’.

“Our long-term goal is to deliver adaptable, versatile equipment that integrates AI and digital technologies to automate routine tasks,” Schaum said. “This allows human expertise to be focused where it’s truly needed, driving productivity and efficiency.”

Citing its strategic alliance with Canon, commitment to hybrid systems, and data-centric approach, Heidelberg believes it is well-positioned to lead the print industry into its next chapter of transformation.

“What sets us apart from other offerings on the market is our unique ability to provide a streamlined workflow that seamlessly integrates all these printing systems, enabling our customers to efficiently manage a wide variety of job types and print runs on a day-to-day basis,” concludes Schaum.
