During Chinaplas 2025, held in Shenzhen from 15 to 18 April, Italian extrusion specialist Macchi organized an exclusive customer visit to one of its latest high-performance installations at the facility of Guangdong Airbaker New Material, located on the outskirts of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province.
Guangdong Airbaker, established around a decade ago, initially focused on manufacturing air cushion packaging for the fast-growing eCommerce sector. As its production standards improved, the company attracted attention from leading European clients. This prompted general manager Mr. Liu to explore growth opportunities in advanced packaging materials, particularly high-barrier food packaging films.
In 2021, following consultations with Macchi’s Chinese partner Rieckermann, Airbaker invested in a 7-layer co-extrusion line featuring an 1,800 mm layflat width and a production output of over 450 kg/h. The system has since delivered consistently high-quality barrier films for international markets, paving the way for a second, more sophisticated line ordered in 2023.
The newly commissioned 9-layer line, operational in early 2025, offers a layflat width of 3,000 mm and a throughput of up to 700 kg/h. The line is engineered to handle both barrier and non-barrier film structures, featuring a Macchi TE710 die head with a 650-mm diameter, optimized for processing polyolefin and barrier resins. It includes two 65/30 extruders for skin layers and additional 55/30 extruders for internal layers, enabling the production of complex symmetrical and asymmetrical films without curling, as well as mono-material PE films.
Advanced features include Macchi’s proprietary carbon fibre air ring integrated with K Design’s Variocool profile control system. The line is housed within an 18-metre tower constructed locally, and includes the BO Plus winder capable of multiple winding modes – contact, axial, and mixed – tailored to film type. Precision dosing and quality control are ensured by a Doteco 4-component gravimetric dosing system and an NDC nuclear sensing head for profile scanning.
Post-Chinese Spring Festival, Airbaker’s new line became fully operational. To mark the occasion, the company opened its doors to a select group of Asian and international visitors arranged by Macchi, providing live demonstrations of the new 9-layer line alongside the earlier 7-layer setup. Guests also toured Airbaker’s newly constructed, state-of-the-art production facility, completed in record time, underscoring the company’s commitment to innovation and rapid expansion in the packaging film sector.
