DIC, a global leader in printing inks and coatings, marked its presence at Labelexpo India 2024 by unveiling its latest advancements in UV flexo inks and sustainability-focused solutions. Utsab Choudhuri, chief technical officer of DIC, highlighted the company’s strategic focus on the evolving needs of the narrow web segment and sustainability during an exclusive interaction.
At Labelexpo India 2024, Utsab Choudhuri, chief technical officer of DIC, emphasized the company’s strategic shift towards the UV flexo portfolio, aligning with the growing demand in the label market. “The narrow web segment was not a key focus for us earlier, but the trend shows a transition from solvent- and water-based systems to UV flexo inks,” he said. “The aesthetics, gloss, and other unique features of UV flexo inks make them highly attractive for labels, and in the near future, we may see advancements like LED UV flexo becoming mainstream.”
He further noted that this shift is evident at Labelexpo, with many exhibitors showcasing innovations in UV flexo technology, reinforcing its potential as a future standard.
Innovations in de-inking solutions
Addressing sustainability, Choudhuri shared insights into DIC’s pioneering work in de-inking solutions, a critical step in enhancing recyclability in packaging. “We are collaborating with a leading brand owner, conducting successful trials and market studies,” he revealed, without disclosing the partner’s name. “De-inking is essential for promoting the recyclability of laminates, which are currently challenging to recycle in India. By removing inks, films can be reused in fresh packaging, contributing significantly to reducing waste and marine pollution.”
Challenges in scaling water-based inks
Discussing water-based inks for flexible packaging, particularly in the food and beverage segment, Choudhuri highlighted scalability challenges. “The primary constraint is speed. While solvent-based systems print at 400 meters per minute, water-based systems initially achieved 200 meters per minute. However, with modifications in cylinders and enhancements to converters’ machines, we have reached speeds of 250-275 meters per minute,” he said.
Sustainability as a cornerstone
Choudhuri reiterated the critical role of sustainability in packaging inks, emphasizing the importance of mono-material structures and recyclability. “Sustainability is about reducing waste, landfill, and marine pollution. De-inking enables the reuse of packaging films, potentially incorporating 30–40% recycled material into fresh packaging,” he explained. “This initiative is a major achievement, offering a pathway to a more sustainable future.”
Labelexpo India 2024 – a platform for innovation
Reflecting on the exhibition, Choudhuri appreciated the influx of inquiries for innovative solutions. “There’s significant interest in features like anti-counterfeiting measures and unique packaging differentiation. Beyond UV flexo, we are also exploring new innovations to meet these challenges,” he said.
