Chemco commissions rPET recycling plant in Gujarat

Chemco Group has commissioned a food-grade recycled PET (rPET) recycling facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking an expansion of its recycling and circular economy operations in India.

The project involves a capital investment of approximately INR 125 crore. The Sanand facility is designed to recycle more than one billion post-consumer PET bottles annually and convert them into food-grade rPET material suitable for use in food and beverage packaging applications. The plant operates on a bottle-to-bottle recycling model.

According to the company, the rPET produced at the facility meets international and domestic regulatory standards. The recycled material has approvals from the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority and complies with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India requirements for food-contact applications. The facility also adheres to applicable Bureau of Indian Standards norms related to plastic recycling and recycled PET materials.

Vaibhav Saraogi, managing director of Chemco Group, said, “This facility represents a strategic shift in how Chemco approaches sustainability. Rather than treating recycling as an external dependency, we have built a fully integrated bottle-to-bottle ecosystem that provides our customers with confidence in supply security, traceability, and compliance. This is not merely an investment in infrastructure; it is an investment in the future of responsible packaging.”

The company stated that the new facility has been developed to support growing demand from global and domestic brands for recycled content, emissions reduction, and compliance with extended producer responsibility requirements. By establishing in-house recycling capability, Chemco aims to help customers meet recycled-content targets while maintaining food safety and product performance standards.

The Sanand plant operates as a closed-loop system, allowing Chemco to control the recycling process from post-consumer bottle collection through to the production of food-grade rPET. This integrated approach is intended to improve traceability, ensure consistent quality and volumes, and reduce dependence on external suppliers.

Chemco said the facility is also expected to contribute to regional industrial development, including the creation of skilled employment, and strengthen Gujarat’s position as a manufacturing hub for sustainability-focused investments.

Chemco Group has more than three decades of experience in PET packaging and supplies packaging solutions to domestic and international customers. The commissioning of the rPET recycling plant is intended to strengthen the company’s ability to offer integrated packaging and recycling solutions to brands seeking compliant and scalable sustainable packaging options.
