Braskem Idesa moves into restructuring, cutting debt by more than USD 920 million

-

Braskem Idesa, the Mexican petrochemical joint venture between Brazil’s Braskem and Grupo Idesa, has initiated Chapter 11 proceedings in the US as part of a comprehensive financial restructuring aimed at reducing debt and strengthening the company’s long-term operating position.

The restructuring agreement, reached with creditors and shareholders, is expected to reduce the company’s senior debt from around USD 2.5 billion to approximately USD 1.6 billion. Braskem Idesa expects to complete the court-supervised process within 60 to 90 days.

Importantly for customers and suppliers, the company said the proceedings will not disrupt its day-to-day operations. Employee wages and benefits, trade suppliers and other unsecured creditors will continue to be paid under arrangements subject to court approval.

At the centre of the restructuring is a fresh capital commitment from Braskem, which will invest USD 476 million and retain its majority ownership in the reorganised business. Grupo Idesa and its affiliates will remain the largest minority shareholder. A portion of Braskem’s contribution has already been funded.

The restructuring represents a significant financial reset for Braskem Idesa, which has faced pressure from a substantial debt burden amid challenging conditions in the petrochemical sector. By reducing leverage and securing additional capital, the company is seeking to create a more sustainable financial platform for its Mexican operations while maintaining business continuity.

The move also has broader strategic significance for Braskem. With its Mexican joint venture now entering a defined restructuring process, attention is increasingly shifting towards the financial position of the parent company in Brazil.

Braskem itself is carrying more than USD 10 billion in debt and is evaluating alternatives with creditors to address its financial structure. Discussions include the possibility of pursuing an out-of-court restructuring process in Brazil.

The developments in Mexico and Brazil therefore form part of a broader effort to strengthen Braskem’s balance sheet across its key operating markets. For the group, the successful restructuring of Braskem Idesa could provide greater financial flexibility while allowing management to focus on operational performance and future investment priorities.

For the Mexican business, the immediate objective is to complete the Chapter 11 process while protecting continuity across production, employment and supply relationships. Longer term, the reduction in debt and fresh capital injection could give Braskem Idesa greater room to compete in Mexico’s petrochemical market and support the joint venture’s role within Braskem’s broader regional strategy.
