At the Aahar 2025 exhibition in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, UFlex showcased a range of packaging solutions that align with its core focus areas. These included packaging solutions with recycled content for easier recyclability, along with advanced security features to enhance brand protection. The company also presented solutions to meet diverse needs, such as zip pouch bags designed to enhance consumer convenience, while 4D WPP slider bags and 3D retort center-seal packs offered brands a competitive edge by improving shelf appeal and strengthening first impressions.

Amit Shah, joint president – flexible packaging, UFlex, emphasized that the company’s participation in such events is crucial—not only to engage with potential customers but also to educate stakeholders about the opportunities in flexible packaging. He stated, “As a market leader, UFlex sees it as its responsibility to bridge the knowledge gap between what businesses need to do to comply with regulations and their current understanding of those requirements. With the implementation of stricter Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules and mandatory Post-Consumer Recyclate (PCR) content regulations from 1 April 2025, it has become imperative for brand owners to align their packaging strategies accordingly.”

Commitment to sustainability

Discussing UFlex’s commitment to sustainability, Shah highlighted the company’s market-leading position in inks, coatings, and additives – critical elements in enhancing packaging sustainability. He stated, “Our primary message to brand owners is to first understand what the law requires of them. Then we guide them on what’s possible today, what’s evolving, and where we, as a society, must eventually reach in terms of responsible packaging.”

A major challenge in the industry is the negative perception surrounding flexible packaging in the context of plastic waste. However, UFlex aims to change this narrative by engaging with industry stakeholders and demonstrating how flexible packaging can be both sustainable and efficient. Explaining the company’s strategic approach, Shah said, “Our approach revolves around three key pillars – sustainability, brand protection, and innovation – ensuring that our packaging solutions are not only environmentally friendly but also enhance product security and market appeal.”

Industry trends

Discussing broader industry trends, Shah highlighted key differences between the Indian and global packaging markets. He explained, “In India, flexible packaging continues to dominate due to its affordability and its role in making products accessible at lower price points. Unlike Europe, where premiumization drives packaging trends, India remains a low-unit pack market, with INR 5 and INR 10 price-point products playing a crucial role in consumer consumption for daily essentials and impulse purchases. While India continues its progress toward an upper- middle-income economy, the current demand for low-unit packs will continue to shape packaging strategies.”

As demand grows, food brands are prioritizing packaging solutions that enable higher production speeds, leading to the need for materials that enhance both efficiency and product differentiation. He remarked, “Food brands are seeking packaging solutions that not only protect their products but also improve operational efficiency. Materials that support higher production speeds while maintaining quality are becoming increasingly important.”

Market Challenges

Reflecting on market challenges, Shah acknowledged that 2024 was a difficult year marked by subdued demand and high commodity inflation impacting the entire industry. He stated, “While UFlex continued to outperform its competitors, many brands faced pressure due to lower sales volumes. To navigate this landscape, UFlex has been working closely with companies to create innovative packaging that enhances product visibility and helps brands stand out in a competitive market.”

Looking ahead, Shah expressed confidence that the packaging industry will adapt to evolving market conditions. He highlighted inflation’s impact on base commodities as a key trend, noting that many food brands have adopted ‘degrammage’ – reducing product quantities while maintaining price points. He explained, “While this strategy may not significantly increase overall food production volumes, it will result in higher demand for packaging, as more packs will be required to sell the same quantity of goods.”

In 2025, Shah expects brands to focus on overcoming inflationary pressures while ensuring affordability for consumers. He concluded, “UFlex is well-positioned to support them in this transition by offering cost-efficient packaging solutions, advanced material innovations, and packaging designs that improve both efficiency and market appeal.”
