Huhtamaki-PPL installs 9-color rotogravure press at its Rudrapur plant

Huhtamaki-PPL (HPPL), a flexible packaging specialist, has added a brand new 9-color rotogravure press to its impressive line of high-performance printers at its Rudrapur facility in Uttarakhand. The inauguration on 8 May 2019 was attended by Charles Héaulmé, president and CEO Huhtamaki Oyj, Olli Koponen, executive vice president, flexible packaging Huhtamaki Oyj, Dr Arup Basu, managing director, Huhtamaki-PPL, India senior leadership team and the employees of its Rudrapur plant.

Huhtamaki-PPL’s Rudrapur plant is one of the most celebrated setups in the Indian packaging industry and is one of its 17 plants which are located across the country. It is equipped with state-of-the-art tools and machinery-from design to printing to laminating and slitting, including a cylinder engraving facility.

There are more than 400 employees currently working in the facility and the plant has achieved 1138 accident-free days, showcasing that employee safety is the utmost priority for the company. Spread over an area of 38,268 square meter (built up area – 13311 square meter), the plant serves high value flexible packaging needs such as cold seal laminates, soap wrappers, shrink sleeves, battery labels applications of some of the biggest brands in the food and FMCG industry. It is one of the largest multi-product packaging locations within Uttarakhand and nearest such plant to Delhi-NCR.

Huhtamaki-PPL’s commitment towards Uttarakhand

HPPL has been contributing to the growth of Uttarakhand and are pioneers in setting such an advanced manufacturing facility in the State.

HPPL Rudrapur has invested in high speed machines which run at maximum efficiency to reduce wastage, electricity and water consumption, and consequently minimize the environmental impact. The plant runs strong programs to encourage cleaner, efficient and environment-friendly transportation systems. HPPL-Rudrapur has collaborated with its partners and other social organizations to keep afforestation as one of its key drives since its inception by planting 45 trees (average) per year. For year 2018 they have added 71 saplings.

‘Thinking Global and acting Local’ – HPPL Rudrapur employs a majority of its manpower from the surrounding areas with a special focus on giving employment to women. The gender diversity ratio in HPPL-Rudrapur stands at a high of 6.65%. HPPL-Rudrapur runs strong programs around apprenticeship and training to build the capabilities of students in the nearby ITI and other technical colleges.

Sustainability initiatives

Operating at the lowest wastage levels in the industry, the HPPL Rudrapur plant generates minimal waste per Kg material produced across the packaging domain. Rain water harvesting, and plantation initiatives in the factory premises have ensured that the HPPL Rudrapur facility has close to 450 trees inside the plant area. They also focus on planting saplings of medicinal plants as Uttarakhand state is acknowledged for having rare species of aromatic &medicinal plants.

HPPL’s contribution towards society through CSR initiatives

HPPL’s Rudrapur facility is devoted to the company’s principle of Corporate Social Responsibility and is continuously engaged in numerous internal and external activities covering community and societal development, education and skill development, health and safety and environment. The company emphasizes a lot on upgrading the knowledge base, skill sets and enhancing the competencies of its people. HPPL is also contributing significantly towards improving the conditions in specific communities both through direct engagement or in cooperation with governmental and NGO entities.
