Südpack completes major expansion of Coulmer medical packaging plant

-

Südpack Medica opened its significantly expanded plant in Coulmer, France, on 17 July 2026. The ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, project partners, neighbors, employees, members of the management board, the owners, and representatives of the press.

The groundbreaking ceremony on 19 September 2023 had marked the launch of what was, at the time, Südpack’s largest single investment project. Nearly three years later, the site – certified to ISO 13485 (medical devices and diagnostics) and ISO 15378 (primary packaging materials – GMP) – now offers expanded capacity for the production of primary packaging for pharmaceuticals and sterile barrier systems for medical device and diagnostic applications. As part of the expansion, the plant’s ISO Class 7 and 8 cleanroom production areas were almost doubled in size. Production at the Coulmer site focuses on the MedGuard product line, which includes pouch systems and other packaging concepts for applications such as implants, surgical kits, wound care products, and surgical textiles. The site also manufactures header bags designed for large-volume medical devices that typically undergo ETO sterilization.

According to the company, the expansion reflects its commitment to the Orne region and to Europe, and is a response to growing demand from the medical device, pharmaceutical, and sterile products industries for film and packaging concepts that meet requirements for quality, process control, safety, particulate cleanliness, sterility, and regulatory compliance. The company said the expansion is also an investment in the future, with Coulmer playing a role in developing PPWR-compliant solutions for the life sciences sector, including recyclable mono-PE concepts designed to replace conventional PA/PE laminates. Südpack said the expansion enables higher-volume production under cleanroom conditions across the process chain – from film production to the finished pouch – supporting consistent quality, security of supply, and reliability.

At the opening ceremony, Südpack’s senior leadership – owners Johannes Remmele and Carolin Grimbacher, chief executive officer Thorsten Seehars, chief operating officer Christoph Angstl, and site manager Samuel Wilquin – welcomed Südpack advisory board member Karl-Josef Keller, board of directors member Reto Garzetti, employees, project partners, representatives of the local media, and senior political and administrative officials. Among them were Thierry Liger, member of the French National Assembly for Orne’s 2nd constituency; Marc Salmon, mayor of Gacé; François Roumier, deputy mayor of Coulmer; and Chloé Jockel of the Communauté de communes des Vallées d’Auge et du Merlerault (CDC VAM).
