The specially-designed packaging solution is focused on using raw materials and transportation packaging that have a lower environmental impact

Clariant has introduced plastic-free Desi Pak ECO moisture adsorbing packets to its collection of adsorbent natural clay solutions with an aim to assist manufacturers and distributors in safeguarding sealed packaged goods from moisture damage.

Desi Pak ECO packets feature bio-based paper crafted from sustainably grown raw materials, utilizing water-based inks and adhesive exclusively. They are available in standard sizes of 1-, 2-, 5-, 10-, and 33-grams, including custom sizes. According to Clariant, the packets are filled with granulated high-grade bentonite clay, which is responsibly sourced, minimally processed, and offers superior moisture adsorption compared to synthetic alternatives under typical packaging conditions.

Ryan Grauer, the head of Sales, Marketing, & Technology, Cargo & Device Protection at Clariant Adsorbents & Additives, said, “Moisture control plays an integral role in the supply chain by preserving the quality and integrity of moisture and humidity-sensitive products. Moisture-related damage has a well-known environmental impact, resulting in waste from discarded goods and emissions associated with replacing damaged items. With the growing demand for packaging solutions with reduced carbon footprints, we are thrilled to offer customers the option of bio-based paper packets that provide the trusted protection performance of our naturally-occurring, highly-adsorbent bentonite clay desiccant.”

The new Desi Pak ECO packets are the latest addition to Clariant’s extensive range of Desi Pak desiccant packets and bags. They bear the EcoTain label, which recognizes products offering exceptional sustainability advantages. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) conducted on the Desi Pak ECO product, based on desiccant manufactured in the United States, demonstrates that responsibly mined bentonite clay possesses a lower carbon footprint and consumes less energy compared to synthetic desiccants due to a simpler production process. Additionally, the production of raw materials requires significantly less water.

To further assist customers in reducing their Scope 3 emissions, Clariant has expanded the sourcing of raw materials with a reduced environmental impact to include transport packaging. The carton packaging used for transporting Desi Pak ECO is recyclable and made from sustainably grown raw materials. Moreover, the company states that Desi Pak ECO is packaged with cobalt-dichloride-free (CDF) humidity indicator cards.

Clariant claims that Desi Pak ECO packets contribute to effective moisture control and the reduction of carbon emissions associated with the production and transportation of packaging materials across various applications. These applications include clothing, textiles, automotive, machinery, tools, nutraceuticals, and food. Upon request, Desi Pak ECO packets can be obtained with clay desiccant that complies with relevant US FDA (21 CFR) and US Pharmacopeia USP <670> testing requirements for Auxiliary Packaging Components.
