SIG celebrates 170 years of striving for better

In June 2023, the Swiss packaging solution provider SIG marked another milestone in its long history – 170 years of operation. Established in 1853 and based in Neuhausen, Switzerland, the company took this occasion to reflect on its remarkable legacy of creativity and advancement, assess its current position, and envision the promising opportunities that lie ahead. The event also provided an opportunity for customers and employees to witness firsthand the values and aspirations that define SIG today and will continue to shape its future: ‘SIG – committed to excellence’.

On June 17, SIG organized its first celebratory event, focusing on engaging the residents of Neuhausen’s local community. The event welcomed them to SIG’s industrial area and headquarters, offering an opportunity to tour the facility and indulge in a delightful food festival.

On June 20th, esteemed customers from various parts of the world were cordially invited to an exclusive event organized by SIG. The program featured a captivating tour, providing insights into SIG’s journey throughout the years, followed by a grand celebratory dinner. The culmination of the series of events took place on June 22, as SIG’s leaders gathered for a focused and productive two-day leadership meeting.

Samuel Sigrist, CEO, SIG, said, “Being in operation for 170 years is something to celebrate and it was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase the spirit of SIG to our global customers and employees. The events reinforced the fact that while SIG has evolved over time, one aspect of our company has always remained the same, our commitment to delivering better for customers, consumers, and the world.”

Presently, SIG has emerged as a prominent industry leader, renowned for its sustainable, forward-thinking, and adaptable packaging solutions. Collaborating closely with customers, the company endeavors to deliver food products to consumers worldwide, prioritizing safety, sustainability, and affordability. In 1906, SIG embarked on its remarkable voyage in the realm of food packaging, starting with the packaging of chocolates.

A major milestone arrived in 1930 when SIG introduced the first beverage carton and filling machine in Europe, revolutionizing the beverage packaging industry. Subsequently, in 1955, Scholle, now an integral part of SIG, pioneered the groundbreaking bag-in-box format, which transformed the landscape of liquid storage and distribution.

In 1975, PKL, a provider of beverage cartons, introduced its innovative combibloc aseptic packaging and filling system. A significant milestone occurred in 1989 when PKL was acquired by SIG, paving the way for substantial growth in the aseptic packaging sector. As the new owner, SIG made the strategic decision at the turn of the century to concentrate solely on its packaging business. Since then, the company has established itself as a prominent player in the industry.

In 2022, SIG further expanded its offerings by joining forces with Scholle IPN and Evergreen Asia. This collaboration enabled SIG to broaden its product range, which now encompasses fresh and aseptic cartons, bag-in-box solutions, and spouted pouches.

Today, SIG stands as a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, distinguished as the only system supplier worldwide that covers cartons, spouted pouches, and bag-in-box packaging. The company’s adaptable technology and commitment to product innovation allow it to offer a diverse range of solutions across various categories and distribution channels. These solutions effectively address the needs of consumers, markets, and the planet, while upholding values of responsibility, flexibility, speed, and affordability.
