Lake Image bolsters variable data integrity for pharma applications at the Xeikon Café

At the Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations 2017, set for 28 to 31 March, Lake Image Systems will highlight two digital print solutions delivering document integrity and variable print quality confidence: Discovery Maxscan contact scanning technology for high resolution print inspection and Discovery Multiscan, the high performance data verification & 100% print quality inspection solution for high speed variable print applications.

With over 3,500 systems installed throughout the global printing industry, Lake Image Systems is a world leader in the design, development and manufacture of imaging and variable print verification technologies. Their in-line, vision based inspection and data verification systems (cameras, scanners and software tools), when installed within printing and finishing processes, enable the inspection automation for high volume, variable print. This ensures that the variable information printed on labels and on flexible packaging is readable, accurate and fully verified to minimize reprint costs and mitigate risks associated with incorrect output being dispatched.

“Our key objective during the Xeikon Café is to raise awareness of our print quality inspection and data verification solutions, the value they bring to digital printing, and the ease in which they can be implemented on Xeikon presses and other equipment,” said Paul Stinson, Lake Image Systems Sales Director. “We aim to educate visitors to Xeikon Café in the benefits of an integrated packaging/label printing solution with built-in inspection capabilities, to significantly improve the quality and integrity of the labels and packaging they print.”

High-resolution print inspection
The award-winning Discovery Maxscan, is a linear, low profile scanning device that captures high resolution, uniform colour images at press speeds. Unlike standard camera technology, this revolutionary technology uses a unique sensor, lens and illumination arrangement that enables the unit to operate at a close working distance producing distortion-free, full colour images with excellent colour representation and repeatability. The Discovery Maxscan image sensor array produces an image with remarkable uniformity, giving true 600DPI resolution, a must for challenging print inspection applications at web or sheet widths up to 929mm (36”).

With digital print resolutions increasing, the compact Discovery Maxscan easily integrates within the transport system of most digital printers, label presses and finishing equipment, without the need for costly additional rollers, redesigned web paths or complex optical assemblies that are typical with standard camera inspection technologies.

High-performance data verification
Discovery Multiscan is a suite of comprehensive data integrity, verification and reporting software tools, which easily integrate with new or legacy printing, inserting, bindery, plastic card or finishing equipment, running at full rated speed for automated, 100% print inspection. The software pulls together images and data from a wide variety of supplied camera and scanner-based technologies, including the Discovery Maxscan contact scanners. These are then processed using a comprehensive range of reading tools to detect, extract and decode all forms of printed text such as barcodes, QRCodes and OCR codes within the images for subsequent processing by Multiscan’s integrity, inspection, control, and reporting applications.

Discovery Multiscan also offer a variety of print quality inspection tools to detect issues such as print registration, printing glitches, positioning and colour deviation to ensure the print is always within the required specifications. If errors are detected then a wide range of actions such as diversion, audible/visible alerts, tabbing or roll mapping for subsequent repairs can be employed, all with full reporting and audit trails.

Live demonstrations of the Lake Image Systems Discovery solutions will be presented at the Xeikon Café to show how they can be an integral component of an end-to-end print and inspect solution of pharmaceutical labels and confectionary packaging applications.
