2016 L9 World Label Awards winners revealed

The winners in the 2016 L9 World Label Awards competition have been revealed, with 34 entries from six associations chosen as category winners or picking up an honorable mention. L9 is an alliance of global label associations for the purposes of formulating policies and gathering strategic information in connection with global matters affecting the worldwide label industry.

Each year, all L9 label associations are invited to submit entries for the World Label Awards. The associations taking part in the 2016 competition include Finat (Europe), TLMI (US), JFLP (Japan), FPLMA (Australia), SALMA (New Zealand) and PEIAC (China). Judged by an international jury the day before Labelexpo Americas in September 2016, the awards structure includes 22 classes covering all the principal printing processes and market applications.

Class winners, as well as those entries receiving an honorable mention (HM), are as follows:

Class 1: Flexo Line

Winner: Hally Labels, Australia (FPLMA) for ‘Endeavour Reserve Pale Ale’

Class 2: Flexo Line/Screen

Winner: QLM Label Makers, Australia (FPLMA) for ‘Owner Parking Permit’

HM: Label Impressions, US (TLMI) for ‘GT’s Synergy Black Chia’

Class 3: Flexo Colour Process

Winner: Pemara, Australia (FPLMA) for ‘Jewel Beetles Stamps’

HM: Inovar Packaging, US (TLMI) for ‘Aloe H2O’

Class 4: Flexo Wine/Spirits

Winner: Multicolor North American Wine and Spirits, US (TLMI) for ‘Girl & Dragon Malbec’

HM: Rapid Labels, New Zealand (SALMA) for ‘Haha Reserve Pinot Noir 2014’

Class 7: Letterpress Colour Process

Winner: Sibel Industry, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Organic Herb Tea (Cecilia & Amelia)’

Class 8: Wine/Spirits

Winner: Sankyo Tac Label, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Kachoufugetsu (Japanese Sake)’

Class 9: Offset Line

Winner: Panprint, New Zealand (SALMA) for ‘Manukora Honey’

Class 11: Offset Colour Process

Winner: Marzek Etiketten + Packaging Group, Austria (Finat) for ‘Kaisersemmeln’

Winner: Sankyo Seal, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Dashi by Sukiyabashi Jiro’

Class 12: Offset Wine/Spirits

Winner: Beijing Sunrise Printing, China (PEIAC) for ‘Great Wall Desert Vineyard’

HM: Multicolor (SA), Australia (FPLMA) for ‘On The Grapevine’

Class 14: Combination Line/Screen

Winner: McDowell Label & Screen Printing, US (TLMI) for ‘Get Real’

Class 15: Combination Colour Process

Winner: Sunmec, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Le Lectier’

HM: Royston Labels, UK (Finat) for ‘Eco Soapia Rose Geranium’

Class 16: Combination Wine/Spirits

Winner: Maru-Sin, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Enma (Japanese Shochu)’

Winner: James Print Australia (FPLMA) for ‘Wingara La Land’

HM: Multi Color Australia (Finat) for ‘Sellicks Hill Diavolo Shiraz Cabernet’

Class 17: Digital Printing

Winner: Digital Label Solutions, US (TLMI) for ‘Tell us about your Kia’

HM: Ҫiftsan Etiket, Turkey (Finat) for ‘Sir Spray Limescale & Rust Remover’

Class 18: Digital Wine/Spirits

Winner: Multicolor Sonoma, US (TLMI) for ‘Precision’

Class 19: Screen Printing

HM: Sibel Industry, Japan (JFLP) for ‘Tsuru Mau’

Class 21: Booklets

Winner: The ELNA Press, Australia (FPLMA) for ‘Bostik 500ml PVC Pipe Cement’

HM: Codex Security Printing House, Hungary (Finat) for ‘Adama Legato 500SC’

Class 22: Innovation

Winner: Schreiner Group, Germany (Finat)for ‘(rfid) Distaferr Mini (UHF)’

The judges for the 2016 competition included Mike Buystedt, (TLMI), Kurt Walker (Finat), Tony Wheeler (SALMA), Andrew Maxwell (FPLMA), Sumio Morimoto (JFLP), Ms Li Chunjie (PEIAC) and Tony White.

‘We are the most critical assessors of the quality of a label, often far in excess of the printers own quality control department. We look for and expect a high standard of printing at this level and are not often disappointed,’ commented White. ‘Each year we see further improvements in the ability of the label converters to amaze us with the quality levels which they achieve.’

In addition, five awards representing the ‘Best of the Best’ entries from the principal printing processes selected during the judging process will be presented at the Label Industry Global Awards during Labelexpo Europe 2017. The judging for the 2017 L9 World Label Awards competition will also coincide with Labelexpo Europe 2017.
