Syntegon adds pilot-scale coater to Sepion series for flexible batch processing

Syntegon, a lifecycle partner to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, has expanded its oral solid dosage (OSD) processing portfolio with the Sepion 75, a pilot-scale tablet coater designed to support manufacturers and CDMOs in handling growing product diversity, smaller and more variable batch sizes, and stricter containment requirements for highly potent active ingredients. The new coater completes the established Sepion series and is aimed at supporting consistent scale-up, flexible batch processing, and containment-oriented manufacturing.

Building on the company’s coating expertise, the Sepion series combines established process knowledge with a machine concept tailored to modern pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements. “By extending the Sepion series to the pilot scale, we support pharmaceutical manufacturers in simplifying development and scale-up while maintaining consistent process principles across production stages,” said Fritz-Martin Scholz, global product manager at Syntegon.

The new tablet coater is designed to enable flexible batch processing across a wide operating range, covering batch sizes from 10% to 100% of the maximum working volume. Two interchangeable drum sizes within a single machine cover batch volumes from 8 to 75 liters, supporting both early development batches and advanced pilot runs without requiring process parameters to be redefined, which the company said allows for flexible production planning and reduces downtime during product changeovers.

An optimized drum geometry combined with an advanced spraying system is said to improve process air usage and allow for shorter processing times. The automatically adjustable spray arm maintains the spray position for different filling levels and is intended to contribute to reproducible coating conditions across varying batch sizes, making the Sepion 75 suitable for applications such as functional coatings.

The whole Sepion series features closed material handling during filling, sampling, and discharge. By minimizing manual intervention, the machine concept is designed to support containment-oriented production for highly potent active ingredients. Containment up to OEB5 is available as an option for all Sepion coaters through split valves, safe-change filters, and extended cleaning configurations, which the company said improves operator safety and reduces contamination risks while supporting compliance with pharmaceutical manufacturing requirements.

Apart from the Sepion 75, the coater series is available in six size variants from 175 to 1,000 liters capacity, covering production outputs from development to commercial manufacturing.

As a lifecycle partner to the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, Syntegon supports customers throughout the equipment lifecycle, from process development and scale-up to qualification, modernization, and services. The company said its process expertise and global service network help customers optimize production performance, maintain reliable operation, and adapt manufacturing processes to changing market and regulatory requirements.
